5071C: Verify your identity and tax return

Prepared by TaxRZR editorial team · IRS sources checked 2026-10-29 (ET) · professional review pending · This page’s Source Notes

Letter 5071C asks you to verify your identity and the income tax return filed under your Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number. It can concern a return you filed or one someone else filed using your information. The IRS now groups 5071C guidance with its CP5071 series page. This is not a tax bill, a missing-return notice or a routine CP05 refund review.

Notice scope. For Letter 5071C identity and return verification. Other identity-verification letters may use different procedures; match the exact code and printed instructions. No collection-ladder rung is assigned.
Notice-specific source status. Current consolidated IRS CP5071-series guidance independently checked October 29, 2026. Additional education from the TaxRZR editorial team. Professional review pending. Actual letter instructions control.

What the IRS can do next

The IRS needs identity and return verification before it can process the affected return appropriately. After successful verification, processing may continue and other return issues can still need review. Verification does not guarantee a refund or a particular payment date.

Follow your actual letter’s verification instructions promptly

Use any response instructions and dates printed on your own letter. The current consolidated IRS CP5071-series webpage does not set a universal response deadline or a guaranteed refund-processing period for every 5071C recipient. Do not replace your letter’s instructions with a generic 30-day countdown, a CP05 waiting period or a promised nine-week payment date. Contact the IRS through verified channels if you cannot complete the stated method.

Next step

Start with your actual letter and the official IRS verification page. If the notice offers online verification, type IRS.gov/verifyreturn yourself. You must verify both your identity and whether you filed the return—even if you did not file it. Do not upload identity information to TaxRZR.

Steps to work through

  1. 01Confirm the letter number and tax year. Access IRS.gov directly rather than following an unsolicited text or email link.
  2. 02If your letter provides the online verification option, use IRS.gov/verifyreturn and follow its identity and return questions. An online identity-account login alone does not finish return verification.
  3. 03Have the letter, the affected year’s tax return, a prior-year return if available, and relevant Forms W-2, Forms 1099 and supporting schedules ready for the official process.
  4. 04If you did not file the return, still use the official verification process to tell the IRS. The current 5071-series guidance says not to file Form 14039 unless instructed when using this verification process.
  5. 05If you cannot verify online, follow the contact instructions on the actual letter and verify the contact through IRS.gov. The verification contact handles identity and return verification, not general refund-status questions.
  6. 06After successful verification, follow the IRS’s processing instructions and retain confirmation. No additional verification step is required merely by TaxRZR, and no processing date is guaranteed here.

Common misreadings

  • Do not use CP05’s paper Form 14039 process automatically for 5071C.
  • Do not send Social Security numbers, tax returns, identity documents, passwords or verification codes to TaxRZR or an unsolicited caller.
  • Do not file another return merely to bypass the verification request.

Source status. Based on our draft book dated October 29, 2026, with IRS sources checked October 29, 2026. Professional review pending. General federal tax education, not individual tax or legal advice. Your actual notice and current IRS instructions control.
Scope. These pages cover federal IRS notices, not state tax agency notices. A federal levy of a state refund is not state-specific tax guidance. The collection ladder is an illustration, not a required sequence or a promise that another warning will arrive.
